Re: 2018 U.S. National Chemistry Olympiad Exams (USNCO)
The U.S. National Chemistry Olympiad (USNCO) program is a chemistry competition for high school students. The purpose of the competition is to stimulate young people to achieve excellence in chemistry. The American Chemical Society has sponsored the program since 1984.
The local Chemistry Olympiad Competition is open to all high school students. Students can review past Local Exams to study for their local competition.
If you are a High School Principal receiving this email we urge you to forward this information to your science or chemistry teacher(s) and recommend that students sign up for the Chem Olympiad exam.
There are two exams: the first exam may be taken by any high school student. The second exam -- the national exam -- is given by invitation only to those students with qualifying scores. ACS Local Sections choose nominees for the second exam -- the national exam -- based on scores from the first exam.
The Portland Section of the American Chemical Society (Portland Section) administers Chemistry Olympiad Exams during the month of March at various facilities or "hubs". Hubs may be any local high school with a qualified proctor. This email solicits information about the first exam and the option to be a proctor and a "hub".
Teachers poll students and submit information via the online form. On a preferred date in March 2018, agreeable to students and proctor, students sit for the exam (multiple choice, written, and lab).
Data from the online form will provide information for ordering exams and scantron scoresheets for the exam; the form also will provide the option to sign up as a "hub". Since the Portland Section area includes 14 counties in southwest WA and northwest OR there is advantage to considering a "hub" if you have students who wish to take the exam. There also may be other nearby high schools that want to consolidate in one local "hub".
An Introduction letter from Dr. Nick Hamel, Chem Olympiad coordinator, is included in this email.
